Becks comes to the U.S…..holy shit $250 million?

When I read yesterday that David Beckham was leaving Real Madrid I wondered where he'd end up. Turns out he's going to L.A. to play for the Galaxy in the MLS. Interesting move. This is by far the largest signing the MLS has ever had and its obviously going to be pretty good publicity but lets not get too carried away here. Becks is past his prime; there's a reason why Madrid let him go and why he's not on the English national team anymore: he's older and not as good as he once was.

Still, he's got one of the biggest names in the sport and him and Posh Spice should create quite the buzz in L.A. I don't really see this move doing too much to increase attendance or tv ratings but perhaps it will help open up the door to more European stars (hopefully younger ones) making the move over here rather then the current situation in which our stars/big names move over there. Either way should be interesting. I bet Beckham jersey's become something of a hot item though.

OK I wrote all that without fully reading the ESPN.com article covering the story: buried in the bottom is this little tidbit: Beckham's five year deal is going to be worth $250 million? Thats insanity. That completely blows up the MLS pay structure and no matter how many jersey's the MLS sells with Beckham's name on the back, I highly doubt they'll make back that much money. The madness.

  1. I later found out that the MLS is only paying a half a million dollars (or possibly 10 million) of his salary and then the rest is covered by endorsements, the post had put up interviews done throughout the country and mainly LA and people thought that this was some kind of joke and that it would not work. I ultimatley couldnt give a shit about david beckham, especially after he was dropped as Englands captain, they say your prime playing years in soccer are from 27-31, so what is david beckham doing, clearly he lost his drive to be a competitive soccer player seeing as how the mls is a joke in my eyes, and also the fact that a 44 year old name Youri Dorkaef (could be wrong spelling) can score 15 goals in the mls proves that the mls is clearly a joke. Anyways just thought I would drop by and show some love, it ultimatley works out that david beckham per season, gets paid 30,000 dollars for every minute of every game of soccer he plays, now just think if your that kid marking him in the mls who gets paid 12,600 dollars (league minimum for a starter) thats about 5.50 a minute of playing if you actually play the entire season.
