Sullivan on Imus

This from Andrew Sullivan all sounds right to me:

The culture has changed since Imus started in radio. White straight men don’t control everything any more, and they don’t get to set the rules for public discourse with the same finality they once did. What we’ve seen here is, I think, a genuine reflection of the new American mainstream. Most Americans simply find the spectacle of a rich white bigot beating up on young black female achievers after a crushing tournament loss to be gratuitously cruel and unfair. Punishing someone for calling college women “whores” – especially those who have beaten the odds and are role models for other back girls and women – is not a new step in political correctness. It’s applying a very old American standard of fairness and decency, which now applies to all Americans, regardless of race or gender. This was the voice of mainstream America speaking. It’s not what it once was. I wonder whether many of Imus’s buddies realize that yet.

There are all sorts of things going on right now that the vast majority of the media, particularly in sports and political coverage, are just wholly unprepared for. There are a lot of white males who have been comfortable doing their jobs with little to no scrutiny who are in for some very unpleasant times as people beginning to realize that these guys suck/are racist/are stupid and then act on that realization.

  1. freedom of speech? reverend sharpton goes after imus for nothing but spoken words when he is a crook with a criminal record and isn’t even a reverend. not to mention rap music is obviously much worse and degrading towards women then the words spoken by imus. i bet hillary clinton had jesse jackson escalate the whole ordeal because he talks shit about her all the time. imus is a liberal prick but he shouldnt be fired. give him a raise.
