Happy 50th birthday Lego

The Last Supper, via Lego's

Today is the 50th birthday of Lego, a toy that dominated much of my childhood. In the house I grew up in, before the move to Chevy Chase, I had a dedicated “Lego Room” in the basement. I loved to play around in that room with all my Lego’s, building buildings and forts. Sadly the old home was in desperate need of renovation and a heavy rain caused serious flooding of said basement, leaving a distasteful mildew in my precious room.

Time magazine has a nice piece on the anniversary, Google is honoring Lego on its home page and Gizmodo has a 50 year timeline and some interesting stats, among my favorite:

- 7 LEGO sets are sold by retailers every second around the world.
- The LEGO bricks sold in one year would circle the world 5 times.

All hail the greatest toy ever invented.
