I think that door is supposed to shut

Odd/annoying little situation on my way to work this morning. As you can see from the above photo I snapped with my iPhone the door on the Metro car I was in refused to close entirely. It kept trying to close but only half of the door worked. The conductor kept making the “please stand [...]

Four wild and crazy days

The D.C. City Council held a very important vote yesterday that was make or break for the inauguration:
Under emergency legislation approved by the D.C. Council yesterday, any District establishment with a liquor license, including restaurants and nightclubs, will be allowed to serve alcohol until 5 a.m. — three hours later than usual — and serve [...]

Happy 50th anniversary Ben’s Chili Bowl

Today is the 50th anniversary of the opening of Washington institution, U St. legend, Ben’s Chili Bowl. Their famous half-smoke, all the way, is truly worthy of its fame. And, even better, they are now served at Nats games, making them much more convenient for me to consume. Here’s a history of the half-smoke (via). [...]

Metro more exciting then previously thought

Via the DCist, I guess my only excuse for not noticing this behavior when I use these stops (and I use both almost every day) is that I’m really not a morning person:
A Metro station manager and a Metro custodian were arrested on prostitution charges after an undercover transit police investigation found they arranged sexual [...]

“Neighborhood Safety Zones”

The DCist:
Can you say Police State? The Examiner has the scoop on a controversial new program announced today that would create so-called “Neighborhood Safety Zones” which would serve to partially seal off certain parts of the city. D.C. Police would set-up checkpoints in targeted areas, demand to see ID and refuse admittance to people who [...]

D.C. area politicians and their bathrooms

Washington Post today (via Oliver):
As Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett works to raise taxes and eliminate 225 jobs, a construction crew is installing a bathroom in his locked suite of offices, complete with a small sitting room and shower. The cost to taxpayers: $65,225.
Leggett’s aides said yesterday that his security detail did not want him [...]

Five-alarm Mt. Pleasant fire

There was a five-alarm fire last night, the first in D.C. since 1970, that destroyed an apartment building in Mt. Pleasant. Pretty sad. Donations are being accepted for victims of the fire at Neighbor’s Consejo, located at 3118 16th Street NW. Contact Evar Sandoval at (202) 234-6855 to make a donation.

Stephen Colbert Portrait hanging at National Portrait Gallary

The portrait is hanging above the bathroom on the 2nd floor, just outside of the America’s Presidents exhibit. The back story, in the form of a clip from The Colbert Report, is embedded after the jump.

In my mind this is what every Metro ride to Virginia looks like.

Cabbies going on strike tomorrow

Hmmm, looks like the cabbies aren’t going to allow Mayor Fenty to give we the people of Washington our sweet, sweet meters without a fight:
District businesses are bracing for a 24-hour taxi strike threatened on Halloween, a high-volume day for cabs, in what drivers say might be the first in a series of strikes to [...]
