Well that would really suck

I enjoy quality time at a casino every now and then. My game of choice is blackjack; I rarely if ever partake in the slot machines as game that relies entirely on luck holds no appeal to me. When I’ve had a spare $5 bill handy I’ve given it a whirl but for the most part I’m fine with letting the seniors dominate.

Having said that, as a gambler, the following story is an outrage. If losing all your money is the worst thing that can happen to a person in a casino then I think this has to be the second worst:

Hoffman was playing the nickel slot machines at the Sandia Resort and Casino on an Indian reservation in New Mexico when he appeared to hit the jackpot: the machine said he won nearly $1.6 million.

“I became ecstatic,” he said.

But the ecstasy was short-lived. Hoffman says in a lawsuit filed earlier this year that Sandia refused to pay, claiming that the machine malfunctioned. Instead, he said, they gave him about $385 and a few free meals at the casino.

“I won money, fair and square, and I’ve been cheated out of my winnings,” Hoffman told ABC News.

The casino says it’s not responsible for what it describes as a computer error and says it offered Hoffman the maximum payout of $2,500 for that particular slot machine. But, a jury may never decide who is right. Lawyers told ABC News that gamblers like Hoffman may have little legal recourse against Native American casinos, which sometimes operate beyond the reach of U.S. courts.

Can you imagine the highs and lows of this experience? Thinking you’ve just won well over $1 million and then finding out they are refusing to pay it? If I was in this situation I’m quite sure I’d flip out.

The nickel slot said he’d won $1,597,244.10. Patrons and casino employees came to congratulate him. He even got a marriage proposal, Hoffman said. But, soon he was asked to come to an executive conference room, where he says he was told the casino refused to pay.

A casino employee “became quite intimidating with me, pointed his finger in my face and said, ‘You didn’t win. We’re not paying you any money. Do you understand what I’m telling you? You’re not getting any money,’” Hoffman said.

A technician from the slot machine manufacturer arrived at the casino within the hour and the casino cordoned off the machine.

“I was a winner and I walked out empty handed,” Hoffman said.

A technical report said the slot machine’s computer malfunctioned, and incorrectly made it appear as if Hoffman won more than the machine is able to pay out. The slot machine has a disclaimer that says it pays a maximum of $2,500 and warns that malfunctions void all winnings, said Paul Bardacke, Sandia’s lawyer.

The technical report, prepared for the casino by Gaming Laboratories International, showed that the machine’s memory malfunctioned, causing the slot to treat a losing spin as a winner — what the report called an “erroneous jackpot.” The machine manufacturer, International Gaming Technology, blamed the problem on a software program.

Bardacke said Sandia offered Hoffman the maximum payout of $2,500.

“If he had gone into a bank and deposited $1,000 and got back a deposit slip that said a million dollars, he doesn’t get to keep the balance,” said Bardacke. “It doesn’t work that way.”

“He knew it was wrong; he knew it was incorrect,” Bardacke said of the “jackpot.” “That’s why he took a picture of it immediately.”

Hard to know whether or not to believe the casino here. On the one hand they clearly would prefer not to pay out $1.6 million and so you could see them doing something dirty; on the other not paying winners is not really a good PR move for a casino. I agree with this assessment completely:

Cases like Hoffman’s may still be bad for business, gambling experts say. “The players have to have an enormous amount of trust in the casino and in the slot machine,” said slot machine expert John Robison.

“The player cannot go inside and look at that random number generator and figure out what really happened on the machine,” he said. “If the machine tells you you won, well then I think you’ve won.”

Pretty sure I won’t be hitting up the slots anytime soon.

Well played sir

I shan't go into extensive detail on my feelings about Senator John McCain (though if you must know, wanted him to be President in '00, wanted him to be VP in '04, became disgusted with him in late '04, currently regard the man as a pathetic example of what some men will do to become President) and obviously I have no desire for him to become President in '08. Having said that, he's just done a pretty cool/smart thing on his website.

If you've been awake the last week and/or are even marginally a sports fan then you must surelly be aware that we are right at the start of March Madness (the NCAA Basketball tourney for your novices {hi mom!}). Essentially everyone in America is filling out at least one bracket and entering office pools or what have you (I happen to be in five different ones but that's just me).

Senator McCain, in a very crafty move, has setup his own tournament pool on his website, tapping in to the high excitement/participation that is going on right now. Its an impressively cool/smart idea, one I wish one of the candidates from my side of the aisle had come up with first. Senator McCain, at the very least, is going to build up his email list (you've got to give up some info to register) and he's going to get some positive media attention because of the innovativeness of the whole thing (positive outside of people pulling quotes that make him seem like a hypocrite)

Now I myself won't be signing up for the Senator's pool as I have no desire to receive contribution solicitations, though I will admit I am some what curious to see what his bracket looked like. So if anyone wants to sacrifice their email address to get a copy of his bracket, feel free and then send me the results. Either way I'm sure it'll turn up some where.

FYI

I'm going to go with the Colts but they won't cover the 7. Daddy needs a new pair of shows (or spent too much Friday night and needs to make up for it. A prairie fire costs how much? For five? Really? Thats outrageous. Make mine a double, would you?)

You can bet on anything

Did you know you can bet on how long Billy Joel will take to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl? I'm not sure exactly why I didn't know that but I didn't. Apparently Bodog.com has the over/under at 1 minute 44 seconds, which is fairly long. Deadspin spins (ha) this as a Billy Joel singing the anthem story but I'm much more intrigued by the betting aspect. Winning that little wager would be a nice way of kicking off a pretty big betting day. My gambling friends, feel free to weigh in in the comments (here's looking at you The Cooler and Don Magic Juan). Anyone done for a little side bet on how long it takes Billy Joel to belt it out? Daddy needs a new pair of shoes.

NFL Week Three Picks

Its that time of the week again, time to make awful NFL picks that are almost definitely guaranteed to lose you money just like they've lost me money. Actually thats not entirely true but things aren't going as well as I'd hoped. I keep letting my heart get in the way of my head (see: Redskins, Washington) and that in turn is affecting my wallet. Anyway last week I went 8-8 against the spread, just like the week before, and 11-5 picking outright winners. I should stick to just picking the winners but I can't help myself. So we'll give it another shot this week. Here are my picks, with more money then I can afford to bet riding on several of these picks. Lines from Sportsbook.com as of 4:00 pm on Saturday.

Home teams in CAPS

Jets (+5.5) over BILLS

Bengals (+1.5) over STEELERS

Jaguars (+7) over COLTS

Season to date:

Outright winneers: 23-9

Against the spread: 16-16

Week Two NFL Picks

Here we go, week two of the NFL season. Last week wasn't so bad from a gambling stand point, I went 8-8 against the spread and 12-4 picking outright winners. Not to shabby. Highlights include picking both the Ravens and the Falcons outcomes, low lights would be the fucking Redskins loss (I don't want to talk about it). Here's this weeks selections, with the spreads coming from Sportsbook.com as of 1:35 pm Friday.

Home team in CAPS

RAVENS (-12.5) over Raiders

COLTS (-13.5) over Texans

BENGALS (-10.5) over Browns

Lions (+9) over BEARS

VIKINGS (+1) over Panthers

EAGLES (-3) over Giants

Bucs  (+5.5) over FALCONS

Cardinals (+7) over SEAHAWKS

JETS (+6) over Patriots

Titans (+12) over CHARGERS

Chiefs (+11) over BRONCOS

Redskins (+6) over COWBOYS

JAGUARS (+2) over Steelers

There's some really big lines out there as clearly the oddsmakers aren't exactly sure who's what at this stage in the game. I'm looking for a couple of home teams to win big and a couple of road teams to keep it closer then expected. Here's the outright winners for the week: Ravens, Colts, Bengals, Dolphins, Bears, Vikings, Eagles, Falcons, Saints, Rams, Cardinals, Patriots, Chargers, Broncos, Redskins, Jaguars. Happy gambling.

NFL Week One Picks

This is going to be something I'm planning on doing at the Sports Note but because that site's not yet back I'm going to do this week's picks here so I can get the whole season done. I'm going off the line's that Sportsbook.com is using as of 7 pm Saturday. I am aware that there's already been an NFL game played but I had the Dolphins winning anyway, so I'm 0-1 for the season.

Home Team in Caps

Broncos (-4) over RAMS

Jets (+2.5) over TITANS

PATRIOTS (-10) over Bills

Ravens (+3) over BUCS

Bengals (+1.5) over CHIEFS

Seahawks (-6.5) over LIONS

Falcons (+5) over PANTHERS

Eagles (-5.5) over TEXANS

Saints (+3) over BROWNS

Cowboys (Pick'em) over JAGUARS

Bears (-3.5) over PACKERS

Cardinals (-7.5) over 49ERS

GIANTS (+3) over Colts

REDSKINS (-4.5) over Vikings

Chargers (-3) over RAIDERS

Looking back it occurs to me I've picked a lot of road teams to cover the spread, something your not really supposed to do. The likelihood I end up looking dumb come Tuesday morning is quite high but you never know. For posterity's sake here's my outright winners: Chargers, Redskins, Colts, Cardinals, Bears, Cowboys, Saints, Eagles, Seahawks, Bengals, Ravens, Patriots, Jets, Broncos and Falcons.

This pisses me off

SWARTZ CREEK, Mich. — A woman who placed a 10-cent Superfecta bet in Michigan on a horse race being simulcast from Hollywood Park in Englewood, Calif. has won $21,584.

The woman, whose name wasn't released, placed two 10-cent Superfecta bets Friday at a raceway in Swartz Creek, near Detroit. The Superfecta requires gamblers to pick the four top-finishing horses in correct order.

The woman collected her winnings at the track Monday.

Why can't this ever happen to me?
