The Sopranos Finale

I’ve never been a fan of The Sopranos. Never gotten in to it, never even watched a full episode in fact. Something about James Gandolfini’s voice really irritates me. Anyway last night, as everyone knows, was the last episode. All the hype surrounding this got me mildly curious to see what would happen so, after a lovely dinner at Raku in Bethesda with Mom’s and Turtle, I turned it on roughly half way through. It was fairly boring as I didnt really have any idea who any of the characters were (that AJ kid seems like a total tool though, doesnt he?) but things started picking up considerably towards the end. Turtle, who had been reading the latest US Weekly, even started to get into it (I was watching in my mom’s basement) with Tony waiting for his family at the diner. It was pretty tense (learn how to park an f’ing car Meadow!) and I was sure something huge was about to happen.

In fact, I got so excited that I shifted positions and accidentally ended up turning off our TV. Right at the crucial moment. I franticly scrambled to turn it back on but do to the unfamiliar remote it took me a second. By the time I got it back on the credits were rolling. Well, needless to say, this was quite irritating. I got all worked up about a show I don’t even watch and then I missed the best part (Turtle was not, shall we say, pleased). Turns out I needn’t have cared as that was, essentially, the ending: a fade to black with nothing exciting happening. So I didn’t miss anything. Now even I find this kind of ending a little annoying and I’m not even a fan. Real fans though were apparently pretty pissed: angry fans crashed the HBO website. Lots and lots of people thought their cable had gone out and they missed the real ending (kind of like me).

Since I dont really care one way or another about the show I won’t pass any judgment on the finale (though if forced I’d say I kind of liked it) but for a more informed, intelligent opinion I’d point you to Tom Shales’ review in today’s Post.
