Killing my buzz

Senator Obama winning the election November 4th would/will be awesome. A great moment. But what happens after? Paul Krugman and Kevin Drum do a good job killing my buzz. Krugman first:

The crisis isn’t the only scary thing going on. Something very ugly is taking shape on the political scene: as McCain’s chances fade, the crowds at his rallies are, by all accounts, increasingly gripped by insane rage. It’s not just a mob phenomenon — it’s visible in the right-wing media, and to some extent in the speeches of McCain and Palin.

We’ve seen this before. One thing that has been sort of written out of the mainstream history of politics is the sheer insanity of the attacks on the Clintons — they were drug smugglers, they murdered Vince Foster (and lots of other people), they were in league with foreign powers. And this stuff didn’t just show up in fringe publications — it was discussed in Congress, given props by the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, and so on.

What it came down to was that a significant fraction of the American population, backed by a lot of money and political influence, simply does not consider government by liberals (even very moderate liberals) legitimate. Ronald Reagan was supposed to have settled that once and for all.

What happens when Obama is elected? It will be even worse than it was in the Clinton years. For sure there will be crazy accusations, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some violence.

The next few years are going to be very, very tough.

Sigh. Here’s Drum:

The danger here is not mobs of violent Republicans marching through the streets. The danger is that John McCain is setting us up for a repeat of the 90s, an era that conservatives to this day have never been willing to come to grips with. If the looney-bin right decides to treat President Obama as not just an opposition leader, but as a virtual enemy of the state, as they did with Bill Clinton, it’s going to be a very, very long eight years. Whatever grownups are left in conservative-land really need to step up to the plate soon before their movement goes even further off the rails than it already is.

I should say I’m a little more optimistic I think then the two of them. I have no doubt that this is the course Republicans and conservatives will take but I question how effective it will be. The political, and not unimportantly the media, landscape is different now then it was in the ’90’s. One can always hope I guess.

Drum to MoJo, new Political Animal

One of my favorite bloggers, Kevin Drum, has left his blog Political Animal at the Washington Monthly and set up a new home at Mother Jones. Taking over Political Animal is Steve Benen, formerly of the now closed The Carpetbagger, and Hilzoy. Here’s Kevin’s last post on Political Animal and Steve’s first.

Here’s some “truthiness” for you: The Colbert Bump, at least for Democrats, is real. Via Drum and Yyglesias

Drum on last night’s results

Ah, a welcome breath of fresh air from Kevin Drum. Here he is on last night’s results:

I have to say I’m dumbfounded at the number of people who seem to be completely freaking out over last night’s results, convinced that they spell doom for the Democratic Party and eight more years of Republican reign. But look: it’s a tough campaign. But that’s all it is. Hillary Clinton is not destroying Barack Obama, blacks and young people and old people and the working class and everyone else will eventually rally around whoever wins, the party is still in good shape, Republican members of Congress are quitting in droves, we’re raising trainloads of money, and John McCain continues to be a putz. Let’s stop the hyperventilating, OK?

Amen brother.

Quote of the Day

I would just like to take this opportunity to express my awe over Andrew Sullivan’s ability to dig up every single piece of anti-Hillary spleen in existence. I literally don’t think he leaves any stone, or any blog comment section, unturned in his daily effort to illuminate his otherworldly loathing for Mrs. C. In its own way, it’s a brilliant work of performance art.

Friday Beagle Blogging

Amber Dog

Picture above is the lovely Amber, my family dog. This is the first post in what, if I remember, will become a Friday tradition: Beagle Blogging. This is pretty much totally inspired by Kevin Drum, who does Friday Cat Blogging, a fan favorite. Interesting trivia: On my first blog I once erroneously attributed the orgins of “Cat Blogging” to Atrios and Kevin called me out on it. True story.
