Good riddance

Finally the long national nightmare is over: Rita Cosby is without a job. MSNBC has wisely chosen not to renew her contract after having already canceled her awful show some time ago and replacing it with documentaries about jails (no, seriously). I have never liked Rita; I'm sure she's a very nice person, etc. but she's awful on TV and the shit she covered on her show was truly without value. I have no idea what the people at MSNBC were thinking when they hired her and I'm glad that Dan Abrams (or whomever makes these decisions) has righted the wrong and given her the boot.

I'll tell you though, it was amusing to watch Keith Olbermann have to go through that little thing where the one host chitchats with the other one about whats coming up in the next hour with Rita(Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert obviously do this the best). You could tell that Keith was gritting his teeth as he had to listen to Rita tell viewers how she was about to uncover the latest in the Michael Jackson trial or Natalie Holloway. Adios Ms. Cosby, you shan't be missed in the slightest.

Friday Random Ten

It's wrong to steal right? But if someone has a pretty cool idea and you take it but give them full credit, then is that alright? I hope so cause I'm going to borrow an idea from Feministe (I think Jill is the one who does this) and post ten random songs that play on my iPod when I hit the shuffle button thing and in theory I'll be doing this every Friday.

I've got a fairly diverse musical collection so at the very least this should be interesting (and considering the amount of ABBA I've got, potentially embarrassing). Anyway without further ado, I present this Friday Random Ten with some pity commentary included:

1) "I'm With You", Avril Lavigne: I have had an unexplainable huge crush on Avril ever since she first burst on to the scene. Actually, so do my college roommates (el mexicano in particular) so I guess that's not too weird.

2) "The Hanukkah Song #2 (Live), Adam Sandler: Makes me proud to be a Jew. This song (and its first version) along with the Thanksgiving song are Sandler at his best. Wish he'd come up with an updated version. Also, any song that name-checks Veruca Salt is a-ok in my book.

3) "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", The Beatles: One of the greatest songs ever, in my opinion. I've got several different versions of it on my iPod and each one is great. George Harrison is/was pretty good (so are the Beatles, for that matter).

4) "Basket Case", Green Day: Great song that would be a must-include in any soundtrack of my formative years. "Dookie" was the first CD I ever owned and anytime I hear a song off that disk it reminds me of jeans, flannel shirts, chain wallets and side part haircuts (this was not a good look for me). That soundtrack would obviously also include Soundgarden, Offspring and, of course, Nirvana, amongst others.

5) "Billie Jean", Michael Jackson: Yeah the guy's insane but in his prime no one was better. His recent musical efforts have been beyond bad but the classics still hold up.

6) "Whats Love Got To Do With It", Tina Turner: Aha. I told you I had a diverse music collection. You know what, forget you, I like this song. And lets not kid ourselves, Ms. Turner can really sing.

7) "Big Pimpin'/Papercut", Linkin Park and Jay-Z: Off the great Collision Course album. Not my favorite track off of it (that would be "Numb/Encore") but not bad.

8) "She's In Love With The Boy", Trisha Yearwood: I have a secret love of country songs (sshhh, don't tell anyone) in general and specifically sad ones or songs by women. I don't know, something about it always gets me. Anyway you might not guess it but I've got a ton of country stuff on the iPod. This isn't a sad song but it's quite good.

9) "Shook Ones Pt. II", Mobb Deep: It is entirely possible that I am the only person in the entire world who has both Mobb Deep and Trisha Yearwood on their iPods. This is actually another formative song for me as my friend Semi-Colon (not his real name) had this CD (The Infamous) and cause I looked up to him (he's older) I went out and bought it, thus becoming my first rap CD. It's a classic and any true rap fan has to have this in their collection.

10) "Wisemen", James Blunt: Last but certainly not least, Mr. Your Beautiful himself. Very catchy song, I like James alot. Beside the oft played "Your Beautiful" there are a number of other good songs on his album, including this one.

Well there you have it people, ten random songs from my iPod. Nothing to embarrassing and I didn't even cheat once. Maybe next week my various Broadway musical soundtracks will make an appearance.
