A black comic pretends to open for John McCain at the Republican Convention. via
Tropic Thunder is a movie starring Jack Black and Ben Stiller. Originally a black actor was cast for a role but he dropped out and they replaced him with…..Robert Downey, Jr. Which would be fine except they didn’t change the race of the character in the movie. So Downey, who is obviously white, is playing a black man. Predictably this is causing some, uh, controversy. As people have asked, you couldn’t find a capable black actor to fill the role? They had to get a white guy to do it? Seems pretty odd. There’s more at this article, including pictures of Downey playing his part.

Via Oliver comes the lovely tale of Arkansas state Sen. Denny Altes who wrote the following in an email that has been made public:
“We are where we were with the black folks after the Revolutionary War, we can’t send them back and the more we (anger them) the worse it will be in the future…. Sure we are being overrun but we are being outpopulated by the blacks also.”
Hmm. Pretty easy call there, sounds racist to me and, I would hope, to you as well. Of course Mr. Altes disagrees, saying he’s sorry if he “offended” anyone but agree to disagree I guess or something like that. As Oliver says, its a wonder the GOP doesn’t get a larger percentage of the black vote with people like Altes around.
