Great obit

When I die (more then likely will occur next month in Africa) I want my obituary to be written by the people who write them for British newspapers. They know how to do it right over there. To wit:

Count Gottfried von Bismarck, who was found dead on Monday aged 44, was a louche German aristocrat with a multi-faceted history as a pleasure-seeking heroin addict, hell-raising alcoholic, flamboyant waster and a reckless and extravagant host of homosexual orgies.

The great-great-grandson of Prince Otto, Germany’s Iron Chancellor and architect of the modern German state, the young von Bismarck showed early promise as a brilliant scholar, but led an exotic life of gilded aimlessness that attracted the attention of the gossip columns from the moment he arrived in Oxford in 1983 and hosted a dinner at which the severed heads of two pigs were placed at either end of the table.

When not clad in the lederhosen of his homeland, he cultivated an air of sophisticated complexity by appearing in women’s clothes, set off by lipstick and fishnet stockings. This aura of dangerous “glamour” charmed a large circle of friends and acquaintances drawn from the jeunesse dorée of the age; many of them knew him at Oxford, where he made friends such as Darius Guppy and Viscount Althorp and became an enthusiastic, rubber-clad member of the Piers Gaveston Society and the drink-fuelled Bullingdon and Loders clubs.

Perhaps unsurprisingly he managed only a Third in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Now thats a great obituary, one I’d be proud to have.

Even more Elizabeth Edwards love

Yesterday I mentioned my love of Elizabeth Edwards. Well now its increased all the more. Chris Matthews had that scum of the earth Ann Coulter on his show yesterday (brilliant choice Chris) and guess who called in? Why Elizabeth Edwards, thats who. The video is provided here (violating my previous policy of including YouTube videos after the jump cause I think this is so good). I think its safe to say that Ms. Edwards comes off quite well and Ann, if possible, comes off like something you’d scrape off the bottom of your shoe after walking in the sewer.

UPDATE: I should also mention that, predictably, one of the first emails I got this morning was from Ms. Edwards soliciting contributions while citing her appearance. Very canny.

And we have a winner

I’ve posted previously about Senator Clinton’s campaign song contest and we can all breath freely again as the suspense is over: we have a winner! Thats right folks, Celine Dion’s “You and I” is the official campaign song of Senator Hillary Clinton! I know, I know, very exciting. Actually its not exciting at all as thats a impressively lame choice but what are you going to do? TNR’s The Plank ran their own little contest and here’s the result.

MC Hammer says bring’em home

Via The Plank, MC Hammer has a new song/video out that calls on President Bush to withdraw our troops from Iraq. It is….interesting. Judge for yourself after the jump.

Senator Clinton is holding a contest to select her campaign theme song. All the choices are pretty lame but I went Dixie Chicks figuring the combination of Senator Clinton and the Chicks would explode the mind of every conservative in the country. (via the Plank)

Canidates and their books

The Associated Press asked the Presidential candidates what was the last fiction book they had read and while there were the usual answers (John Grisham) some are quite interesting. To wit:

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson: ”The administration’s energy plan.”

California Rep. Duncan Hunter: ”The Democrats’ proposal to balance the budget.”

Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo: ”An Inconvenient Truth” by Al Gore.

Well played sirs. The oddest though was Senator Clinton’s choice, ”Team of Rivals” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Unless I am mistaken (and I’m not) “Team of Rivals” is a work of non-fiction, not fiction like the question asks. Maybe this is a very sly swipe at the plagerism allegations against Doris Kearns Goodwin (but somehow I doubt it).

Battlefield Earth

Milt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts and current Republican Presidential candidate, when asked on Fox News Channel what his favorite novel is, responded: Battlefield Earth, by L. Ron Hubbard. L. Ron Hubbard, of course, is the founder of Scientology (famously followed by Tom Cruise and others). Nothing more needs to be said.

Note to self: read own book

I understand that sometimes famous people are either too busy or unskilled to write their own books, hence the heavy use of ghostwriters. Often this is for the best as an incoherent, awful book actually written by a famous person is obviously worse then a book written by a ghostwriter that incorporates the famous person's ideas/thoughts/words. Having said that, its probably a good idea to, you know, read the book that is purported to be yours. Case in point, former Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX):

Appearing on Hardball with Chris Matthews to promote his new book, No Retreat, No Surrender, it's clear former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) didn't write it and perhaps never even read it before it was published.

Matthews asked DeLay about passages in his book where described former Rep. Dick Armey (R-TX) as "drunk with ambition." Amazingly, DeLay denied writing that, even after Matthews showed him the underlined passage in his own book. (Political Wire)

The Edwards press conference

Watched the entire Edwards press conference and the two big pieces of news are obviously that 1) Elizabeth Edwards' cancer is back and 2) (and much less importantly) Senator Edwards is not suspending his campaign (contrary to the information cited in my previous post). Here's what the WaPo is reporting concerning the cancer:

Elizabeth Edwards' doctor told reporters she has metastatic Stage IV breast cancer that has spread to other parts of her body. Medical tests yesterday confirmed that her cancer has spread to the bone, the couple announced.

"The biopsy showed the cancer had returned" and spread, John Edwards said. Nonetheless, he added, "We are very optimistic about this."

The cancer is not curable but it is treatable, John Edwards said.

This is, obviously, not good at all. I won't pretend to be a doctor or anything but from what I've heard in talking to people with some experience in these matters its not good. Again I suppose all that can be done is wish the Edwards family well and hope for the best.

As for Senator Edwards' decision to keep campaigning, I'm not really sure what I think. I don't think he would make that choice without consulting his wife but then, from what I know of Ms.Edwards, I wouldn't expect her to say anything but that he must continue. Senator Edwards did say:

"Any time, any place I need to be with Elizabeth I will be there—period."

and while I believe this to be the case (as it absolutely should be) it puts him at some sort of disadvantage to his opponents who (thankfully) do not have the same tragic problem to deal with. I'm not sure exactly how its possible to be a candidate running for your party's nomination and a supportive husband all at once, though I am confident that if anyone can pull it off its Senator Edwards.

I can't stomach getting in to the politics of this news but I will pass along that several people at my office who could stomach discussing this in cold political terms all agreed that this was a positive for Senator Edwards' political chances. Take that for whatever its worth.

Other notes: Ben Smith over at the Politico has a post up explaining how he got the Edwards thing completely wrong (this is where I got my info but I also saw numerous other organizations predict the suspension of the campaign as well). And here's one story of Ms.Edwards' kindness, I imagine we'll be seeing many more of these types of stories told in the next few days.

I'm still processing my thoughts on the whole matter and I'll probably be returning to this as things come together.
