My recently aquired love Dexter was nominated for a Best Drama Emmy. How’d The Wire not get nominated though?

Shot by shot breakdown of the final montage from Season Five of The Wire. Some what interesting, obviously contains spoilers so beware those who haven’t gotten to Season Five.

The Wire finale

The Wire

I don’t have much to say about the finale last night, other then to say I enjoyed it and was glad Simon valued his viewers enough to give some closure to the whole thing. Certainly there are many places to go for various commentary (here and here and here for instance). Though I caught on to it late, only this season in fact, its by far my favorite show of all time and it will be missed.

In Wire-related news, I am very much looking forward to David Simon’s next project, the HBO miniseries Generation Kill which is based on one of my favorite books of the same name. That’s out in July and should be quite good. I think the guy who played Ziggy even has a role in it.

And finally, the Time magazine piece by Simon and company on the drug war is an interesting read, particularly this part:

If asked to serve on a jury deliberating a violation of state or federal drug laws, we will vote to acquit, regardless of the evidence presented. Save for a prosecution in which acts of violence or intended violence are alleged, we will — to borrow Justice Harry Blackmun’s manifesto against the death penalty — no longer tinker with the machinery of the drug war. No longer can we collaborate with a government that uses nonviolent drug offenses to fill prisons with its poorest, most damaged and most desperate citizens.

Goodbye Wire. I love you.
